The Responsibilities of a Board Member

No matter how old or structure any board has specific set of responsibilities. These include ensuring the assets of the non-profit are utilized with care and protecting shareholders’ interests, and demonstrating the utmost respect for governance rules, even when they are not in the individual’s best interests.

Participation at meetings and attendance

Board members must be able to attend meetings in person or via the internet. This means that they must read the agenda prior to meeting and actively participating in discussions and decisions. Board members should also participate in committee meetings to understand the work of the organization and its mission.

Financial Management

This includes preparing and re-reading the budget, coordinating reserve funds, and making sure that assessments are collected. To make decisions and reduce risks the board must be aware of the finances of the community.

Policy Compliance / Documents governing the Policy

This is an extremely important obligation that requires a thorough understanding of all federal, local, and state laws. This will ensure that the community is continuously in compliance, and the board can make appropriate decisions in the situation of an emergency. It also means that you must be able to address residents’ concerns and questions, and enforce the rules when necessary.
